Shopify and WooCommerce are the two dominant systems in DACH e-commerce in 2026 – and in many projects the choice between them gets made too quickly and too ideologically. On LinkedIn a Shopify-first camp pushes its price advantage over WordPress to the front; WordPress forums read like a mirror image. Both sides are locally right and structurally wrong. The honest answer: there are shops where Shopify is the better choice, and there are shops where WooCommerce is the better choice. The difference is not decided by the platform name but by range, team skills, integrations, and a sober three-year calculation.

At clickpuls we build both systems. Martin, Mathias, and Enrico run shops for merchants in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland – as a Shopify partner since 2023 and with WooCommerce experience that reaches back further. This article shows from the field which criteria we really check in discovery – and when we recommend which system to which client. The basics: what is what?

Shopify

A fully hosted SaaS solution. You rent shop, hosting, security, updates, and checkout as one package. Shopify is publicly traded, runs more than four million shops worldwide according to its own figures, and has its focus on D2C brands and classic B2C trade.

We do not produce that prototype as a wireframe or static draft but as a clickable live prototype directly in the browser. Decision makers immediately feel how the future system behaves instead of reconstructing reality from screenshots. That saves a presentation round and surfaces gut decisions early – often before the final platform question is even answered.

Cost comparison: three years, honestly calculated

The most common misconception reads: "WooCommerce is free, Shopify is expensive." That is true at the first month price, not at the three-year total. For a mid-sized shop with 500 to 2,000 orders per month, total cost is in a similar range – it just distributes differently across platform, hosting, apps, and maintenance. Exactly this distribution is the decision every merchant should actively make.

Cost verdict: For a single shop over three years total cost lands in a similar ballpark. Teams with WordPress competence in-house come out cheaper on WooCommerce. Teams without dev resources save real staff cost on Shopify, because updates, security, and hosting fall away. In the discovery workshop we calculate the concrete numbers for each case and disclose the assumptions.

DACH-specific requirements

In the German-speaking market, online shops face strict rules. Data protection, invoicing, and checkout duties are the three axes where the platforms diverge.

GDPR compliance

Shopify: EU servers available, data processing agreement downloadable, cookie management via Consentmanager or Usercentrics. Caveat: not every third-party app in the App Store is GDPR-reviewed – plugin selection matters.

WooCommerce: Full data sovereignty with your own hosting in Germany or Austria, your own database, every query under control. Flip side: you carry the GDPR responsibility yourself and need documented processes.

Invoicing & accounting

Shopify: Apps like Sufio, Billbee, or a direct Lexoffice integration are mandatory, because native Shopify invoices alone are not audit-proof under GoBD in Germany and Austria. Cost: 10 to 40 euros per month depending on volume.

WooCommerce: Germanized Pro or MarketPress German Market deliver invoice numbers, base prices, and legal texts in a court-proof manner. One-time licence plus annual updates between 80 and 250 euros.

Legal texts & checkout

Shopify: Legal texts via app or Händlerbund integration, checkout customisation only through Checkout UI Extensions and Shopify Functions. Sufficient for classic B2C, B2B logic typically needs Shopify Plus.

WooCommerce: Checkout fully open, every business rule modifiable via filters and hooks. Germanized makes the frontend legally watertight for DE and AT while the checkout stays freely customisable.

DACH payments: Klarna, EPS, Sofort and friends

The relevant DACH payment methods work on both systems. Integration depth differs, availability does not. Shopify bundles Shopify Payments (Stripe-based) for card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Klarna, and PayPal into one interface, with EPS for Austria running through Mollie or Unzer and Sofort now merged into Klarna. One contract, one reconciliation, automatic fee calculation – comfortable for smaller teams.

WooCommerce relies on native gateways: WooPayments for cards and wallets, the official PayPal plugin, the Mollie plugin for EPS, Sofort, Bancontact, and iDEAL, and the official Klarna-for-WooCommerce plugin. Upside: you pick the cheapest provider per method and optimise fees. From 500,000 euros annual revenue this optimisation typically lifts several thousand euros per year. Below that, Shopify Payments simplicity wins, because every additional gateway contract produces reconciliation effort.

Scaling and performance

When does it get tight? The honest answer: rarely at the platform, almost always at the setup.

Shopify

  • Limits at checkout customisation, API rate limits, and variant-heavy catalogues
  • Shopify Plus from roughly 2,300 US dollars per month – justifiable from about 1M euros annual revenue

WooCommerce

  • Performance tied to hosting – cheap shared hosting actively destroys conversion
  • Managed hosting at Raidboxes ships with cache, CDN, and backups out of the box
  • A dedicated Hetzner stack with Nginx, Redis, and Cloudflare scales to 500+ orders per day
  • Full control means full responsibility for updates and security
  • Internationalisation through WPML or Polylang – mature, configuration-heavy

Headless commerce: possible on both, differently priced

Both systems run as headless backends. Shopify offers Hydrogen, a Next.js-style framework deployed on Oxygen or Vercel. Alternatively we use Next.js with the Storefront API client – design system and rendering stay free, checkout stays with Shopify. WooCommerce goes via the Store API or the WordPress REST API plus custom endpoints, typically Next.js with ISR. The bigger piece of work sits at checkout, because building it from scratch would rebuild tax logic, discounts, and shipping rules. Most headless WooCommerce shops therefore keep the native checkout in an iframe or redirect back to the classic frontend.

Headless pays off from about half a million euros annual revenue or for an unusual brand expression that a standard theme cannot carry. Our hosting stack for headless frontends runs on Fly.io or Hetzner with Cloudflare in front – all components GDPR-compliant inside the EU.

When Shopify, when WooCommerce?

Shopify is ideal if...

  • You want to go live in weeks without a dev team
  • Your focus sits on marketing, brand, and sales
  • You sell internationally and want to use Markets
  • You need a reliable, low-maintenance checkout
  • Budget should run predictably on a monthly basis
  • You run D2C or classic B2C

WooCommerce is ideal if...

  • You already run a WordPress site with traffic
  • You need full control over checkout and business rules
  • You need B2B with tiered pricing without a Plus budget
  • Content and SEO are core growth levers
  • You need specific integrations (ERP, PIM, EDI)
  • You have WordPress competence in-house or a partner

Migrating between the systems

Many shops switch platform after three to five years – because the business model shifts, B2B enters the picture, or the current system hits flexibility limits. A clean migration has three parallel workstreams: data, SEO, and payment. Data moves via the Admin API on Shopify or WP-CLI on WooCommerce, with 1:1 mapping of SKUs, variants, metafields, and stock. SEO is the critical piece, because every URL needs a 301 redirect – we build the redirect map from the old sitemap.xml and deploy it before the DNS switch. Payment moves last, because active mandates, subscriptions, and open payments cannot migrate without customer action. Realistic project length: six to twelve weeks, fixed price after discovery. Faster shots under four weeks empirically end in ranking drops.

Pricing model and project start

We work with fixed price after discovery. The first workshop clarifies goal, range, integrations, and team setup. From there we cut the project into clearly scoped packages and price each package as a fixed amount. For full Shopify shops the entry size starts at 20,000 euros, because discovery, theme work, app configuration, data migration, and launch support remain substantial effort. WooCommerce projects land in a similar range depending on hosting setup and integration depth. Ongoing support runs as a retainer from 1,700 euros per month, including monitoring, smaller changes, support, and reporting. For WordPress-based shops we additionally offer a maintenance package from 140 euros per month (plus a one-time security audit from 420 euros). We do not give performance guarantees for the platforms themselves, because Shopify and hosting providers run their own infrastructure. We do guarantee clean theme performance, structured interfaces, maintainable code, and traceable decisions. On business days we respond within 24 hours.

Conclusion: platform follows strategy

Shopify and WooCommerce are both mature systems that carry multi-million-euro revenue with the correct choice and a clean setup. The decision does not fall along platform dogma but along five questions: who runs the shop operationally? Which integrations are mandatory? What does the 24-month revenue target look like? How much checkout flexibility does the market demand? And what does three-year TCO look like under honest assumptions? Anyone holding these five answers before platform choice avoids the expensive second switch three years later.
